When decay or a fracture reaches the nerve, the choice is root canal treatment or extraction. A root canal removes the inflamed nerve, cleans and disinfects the canals, then seals them — and your natural tooth stays where it belongs.
When do you need a root canal?
- Throbbing pain that gets worse at night or with heat.
- Sensitivity that lingers after the trigger is gone.
- Swelling or an abscess in the gum near the tooth.
- A tooth that darkened after an injury.
- Deep decay near the nerve on an X-ray.
How we treat root canals

Re-treatment
If pain returns after a previous root canal, we reopen the tooth and clean the missed or incomplete canals. Success rates are high with magnification and 3D imaging.

Aftercare
Avoid chewing on the tooth until the crown is fitted, take a simple painkiller if needed, and clean normally. Contact us if swelling lasts more than 3 days.
Frequently asked questions
Is a root canal painful?
No. It's done under full local anaesthesia — the pain you feel beforehand is what we're treating. Mild tenderness on chewing may last a day or two.
How many visits?
One in most cases, thanks to rotary instruments and digital imaging. Severe infections may need two.
Do I need a crown afterwards?
Molars usually do, as the tooth becomes more brittle. Front teeth may only need a cosmetic filling.
What's the alternative?
Extraction followed by an implant. Keeping your natural tooth is always better when possible.
How long does the tooth last after treatment?
Usually a lifetime, if restored with a good crown and cleaned regularly.
